Far from being separated from his Father on the cross, the death of Jesus is his complete entrance—with his Father and the Holy Spirit—into the abyss of our darkness, sin, and shame. In the redeeming genius of the Trinity our cruel rejection of Jesus became the way of the Father’s embrace and the way of our anointing in the Holy Spirit. This trinitarian vision of atonement opens new doors for our understanding of the Holy Spirit and his profoundly personal and liberating work in our lives.
